It's hard to believe, but we're already in the fourth quarter of 2026.
For many business owners, this is the time of year when things start moving even faster. You're trying to finish the year strong, take care of your current clients, close out projects, handle the day-to-day work, and somehow find time to think about what's next.
But here's the thing:
You don't have to wait until January to start preparing for 2027.
In fact, the fourth quarter is a great time to take a step back, look at how your business is operating, and make some decisions about what needs to change before the new year begins.
1. Look at What Worked This Year
Before you start planning for 2027, take a good look at 2026.
What worked?
What didn't?
What services brought in revenue? Which clients were the best fit for your business? What processes made your life easier?
And just as importantly, what felt harder than it needed to be?
Sometimes the things we need to change become obvious when we simply stop long enough to look at them.
2. Identify What's Taking Too Much of Your Time
As a business owner, your time is one of your most valuable resources.
Take a look at your daily and weekly responsibilities.
Are you spending hours responding to emails? Organizing files? Scheduling appointments? Following up with clients? Entering information? Managing paperwork?
Those tasks may be necessary, but that doesn't necessarily mean you need to be the person doing all of them.
Q4 is a great time to identify the tasks that could be delegated, automated, simplified, or eliminated altogether.
3. Clean Up Your Systems and Files
If your computer, inbox, Google Drive, CRM, or other business systems have become a little...well, chaotic, you're not alone.
Q4 is a great time to clean things up.
Create consistent folders.
Archive old files.
Review your client records.
Clean up your inbox.
Update your templates.
Review your workflows.
Make sure you can actually find the information you need when you need it.
You don't want to start 2027 looking for last year's information in a pile of digital clutter.
4. Review Your Client Experience
Your business may have changed since the beginning of the year.
Your services may have changed. Your pricing may have changed. Your processes may have changed.
But have you looked at the experience your clients are actually having?
Take a walk through your client journey.
What happens when someone first contacts you?
How quickly do they receive a response?
What happens after they decide to work with you?
Are your onboarding steps clear?
Are clients receiving consistent communication?
Are there places where the process feels confusing or unnecessarily complicated?
Small improvements to the client experience can make a big difference.
5. Decide What You Need to Stop Doing
This one is important.
We spend a lot of time talking about what we need to add to our businesses.
New services.
New products.
New marketing.
New goals.
But sometimes the best thing you can do for your business is decide what you're going to stop doing.
What isn't working anymore?
What takes too much time for too little return?
What are you doing simply because you've always done it?
What no longer fits the direction you want your business to go?
You don't have to carry everything from 2026 into 2027.
6. Start Planning for the Support You Will Need
If you're doing everything yourself right now, don't wait until you're completely overwhelmed to start looking for help.
Think about what your business will need next year.
Do you need administrative support?
Customer service support?
Real estate transaction or listing support?
Help organizing your systems?
Someone to help keep the behind-the-scenes work moving?
Start thinking about those needs now.
You don't necessarily need to hire a full-time employee. Sometimes bringing in the right virtual support can give you the additional help you need without adding a full-time position.
7. Create Your Q1 Starting Point
Finally, decide what you want January to look like.
Not everything needs to be figured out.
But you should have a starting point.
What are your top priorities for Q1?
What needs to be completed before January?
What systems need to be in place?
What do you want more of?
What do you want less of?
And perhaps the biggest question:
What needs to change so your business can operate better in 2027 than it did in 2026?
Don't Wait Until January to Get Organized
January is often when business owners start thinking about making changes.
But January is not the time to discover that your systems are a mess, your files aren't organized, you're doing too much yourself, and you have no idea where to start.
Use Q4 to prepare.
You don't have to completely reinvent your business before the end of the year.
Sometimes, you just need to clean things up, make a few decisions, put better systems in place, and get the right support around you.
Your 2027 business starts with the decisions you make in Q4.
If you're looking at your business right now and thinking, "I know I need to get some things organized, but I don't know where to start," that's exactly where I can help.
